Airport & Transportation

The nearest airport is in Asheville, about 30 minutes away. The Asheville Regional Airport is currently served by Continental Express, Delta Connection, Carriers ASA and COMAIR, Northwest, US Airways, and US Express. Nearby airports include Tri-Cities, Tennessee (70 miles), Spartanburg/Greenville (2 hours), Charlotte (2 hours) Greensboro, (3 hours), Knoxville (3 hours), Raleigh/Durham (4 hours) and Atlanta (4 hours 40 minutes).

We checked Jet Blue and most major airlines to see which were the most cost-effective airports. (Southwest doesn't fly into Charlotte but does fly into Raleigh/Durham.) Generally it costs about an extra $100 to fly into Asheville. Charlotte is a cost-effective option and only two hours away. (Today, for example, JetBlue it is $229 from Oakland to Charlotte.)  Kimberella will assist with transportation from Charlotte.

The rest of the directions:

The light is a somewhat confusing intersection. The exit ramp from the north, Weaverville Highway, Monticello Road, Dula Springs, and Buncombe High School Road all come together here and you may have to pay close attention about where to turn. Go between the Corner Store on the left and the strip shopping center with a pizza place, video store, etc, on the right. There is a "No Outlet" sign there so don't let it confuse you - you do want to go down the dead end road. The name of the road changes from Monticello Road to Dula Springs Road at that point and it does dead-end about 3 miles from that intersection, past our drive. Some people are tempted to veer off to the left and the street sign is slightly angled. Near the intersection next to the pizza place, you will see a street sign for "Brittain Cove Presbyterian Church, 2 miles". Actually it is 1.6 miles. Look for another church sign as a landmark for your next turn.

Dula Springs is a curvy country mountain road. There are several turn-offs, scenery, a pasture. If it is daylight, it is a nice drive. After dark, it is kind of hard to find the next turn. If it is dark, you might want to call from the shopping center.

After the Brittain's Cove Presbyterian Church (a small church on a hill on the left) make the first left turn. There are several mailboxes on the right on Dula Springs, including ours, and when you take the left, you'll immediately be sitting in a fork with several driveways that all go to one or two houses each. To the far right is a street sign saying "Pop's Place".

Turn up Pop's Place. (Up is the correct word here. It is steep.) The road is gravel with concrete filling some of the ruts for a short ways then you get onto blacktop. (The picture below is of the black top portion of the road.) The gravel road curves a couple of times. You'll pass a driveway or two, a shed, an older log home on the right, and another home on your left before coming to black top pavement. Just past the start of the blacktop, on the left you'll see a travel trailer and old shed. That is our property and the house is just above that. It is a three level log house with decking.

There are several short driveways for our house. The best one to use is behind the house at the top of the property next to the split rail fence. That takes you to the back of the house with a walkway that enters the living room. If that driveway is full, there is room to turn around there and you can use one of the other driveways, including the one down by the shed and the trailer. There is plenty of parking by the travel trailer and shed.

Cell phone service works pretty well at the shopping center at the start of Dula Springs Road but is patchy after that.
